The Opinion of One Christian Professional Firefighter |
This isn't going to be a lesson on safety do's and don'ts, though. Bad things happen every
day to people: to young and old; to rich and poor; to male and female. Color, race, and
religion have no bearing: bad things happen to everyone. The question is how to get
through it without giving up, and what happens when it is all over.
Once, about 20 years ago, a car was burned from end to end. The owner ran out of a
building and began crying, "My car! My car! What am I going to do?" His whole world
collapsed - he felt that he might as well have died, because his car was totaled. The sad
reality about the car was that it was a real old rusted junk, but it meant everything to that
man.
Beside accidents, illnesses, and violence, stress and depression can hasten a premature
death. The Bible says ".... it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
(Heb 9:27) But Jesus said: "The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I
am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)
There is someone (the thief) at work in our lives who wants to take away what we have....
our finances, our health, our joy, our very lives. That thief is defined in the Bible as Satan,
but Jesus said that He came to give us LIFE - eternal life with Him in Heaven and a more
abundant life here and now.
'Wait a minute,' you're probably saying to yourself..... 'Why are you quoting the Bible to
me? What relevance can IT possibly have to my life?'
Well, if the Bible is just a book of stories instead of the Word of God as it claims to be, then it doesn't have any real relevancy. For millions of people however, the Bible has proven itself, not just on a personal level, but also archeologically and prophetically.
Biblically cited cities have been thought to have never really existed, but have shown up after archeological digs. The Dead Sea Scrolls have shown that we have the same Bible texts as they were thousands of years ago in that the Isaiah Scroll is almost exactly the same as the book of Isaiah is in our Bibles today.
The end times were predicted in the Bible, but the predictions centered around the nation of Israel. No problem, except that there was no nation of Israel for almost 1,900 years! No scholar during that period thought that the predictions could possibly be literal, but then in 1948, the nation of Israel was re-born.
Predictions of the coming Messiah (with the time frame of when He would come) were given as early as the book of Genesis (chapter 49 verse 10). They continued all through the Old Testament pointing to the arrival of Jesus, to His death on the Cross for our sins, and His resurrection.
Jesus said:
"I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" (Jn.14:6)
"... him that cometh to me I will in no way throw away." (Jn.6:37)
"The thief comes not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." (John 10:10)
